In contrast, the Greco-Latin churches were influenced by their roots in classical antiquity.

Arius was concerned to maintain a Christian monotheism against what appeared to him to be the introduction of ideas of change in the Godhead. Ironically, his opponents thought that Arius ran the danger of presenting Christ as a demigod, and thus the question arose as to how this differed from pagan polytheism. Furthermore, it appeared that Arius was claiming that Christ’s perfection was not therefore in his nature, his being one in substance with God, but in his voluntary fulfillment of God’s will.

Like Donatism, however, Pelagianism has a perennial appeal and continually crops up in the history of Christianity.
