Since many tile bodies are colored naturally, the engobe is used to cover the color in some instances, while in other cases coloring ingredients may be added directly to the body. The number of coats of glaze applied is determined by the effect desired. In certain cases a single coat is all that is necessary. In other cases two or more coats are necessary to produce the texture. Special equipment has been designed to apply three or four types or colors of glaze in one application. The method or procedure used is in most cases the result of experience in the handling of the materials used.

But what of the balance of the whitewares industry? Dinnerware, electrical porcelain, hotel ware-are these plants doing anything significant? If not, what will be the effect on competition next year or the next? Look at refractories and the amount of research they are doing. Perhaps there are not sufficient funds in whitewares plants for development work. A cooperative venture should be considered. The British Ceramic Research Association has been most valuable to that nation’s industry. A number of years ago an attempt was made to set up a Whitewares Research Association in the United States, but it died because of a few men who could not see the value in a cooperative venture and the similarity in different branches of whitewares.
