The know-how of computerized development popularity and electronic photo processing, after over twenty years of uncomplicated study, is now showing in very important purposes in biology and drugs as weIl as business, army and aerospace platforms. in line with a guideline from Mr. Norman Caplan, ·the application Director for Automation, Bioengineering and Sensing on the usa nationwide technology starting place, the authors of this ebook prepared the 1st Uni ted States-France Seminar on Biomedical photograph Processing. The seminar met on the resort Beau web site, St. Pierre de Chartreuse, France on might 27-31, 1980. This e-book comprises lots of the papers offered at this seminar, as weIl as papers (by Bisconte et al. and by means of Ploem ~ al.) mentioned on the seminar yet now not showing at the software. We view the subject material of this seminar as a confluence amon~ 3 extensive clinical and engineering disciplines: 1) biology and drugs, 2) imaging and optics, and three) laptop technological know-how and laptop engineering. The seminar had 3 targets: 1) to debate the cutting-edge of biomedical photo processing with emphasis on 4 subject matters: microscopic photo research, radiological picture research, tomography, and picture processing know-how; 2) to put values on instructions for destiny learn so that it will provide information to companies assisting such examine; and three) to discover and inspire a variety of parts of cooperative learn among French and Uni ted States scientists in the box of Biomedical photo Processing.

2 3 29 For the architecturally complex organs, analyses based on sampling areas of one section is problematic, although apriori the process is possible for smears. Thus it is necessary to correlate the results of an analysis with the true position of the object within the section. From these observations it should be apparent that image analysis will constitute an indispensable method for complex tissues. This is not the case for the analysis of smears which can, at least in part, be replaced by f10w cytometry (Horan and Wheeless, 1977).
